Third Generation Laser Eye Surgery

04 March 16
Blog Post

The Wellington Eye Clinic, Beacon Medical Campus, Dublin 18 is pleased to introduce the SMILE vision correction procedure.

The SMILE procedure (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is the latest in laser eye surgery and is often referred to as “3rd Generation Laser Eye Surgery.”

Following on from the success of surface treatments (LASEK & PRK) and flap-based treatments (LASIK), the SMILE procedure reshapes the cornea in a novel way without making a flap, and allows patients to eliminate their need for glasses and contact lenses.

About SMILE - Third Generation Laser Eye Surgery

SMILE is currently used for the treatment of myopia (short-sightedness) and astigmatism especially when the amount is higher (e.g. above minus 5.00D).
The Zeiss VisuMax laser creates the lenticule within the cornea and then this small sliver of corneal tissue is removed from within the cornea without making a flap.
The easiest way to understand SMILE is to think of it as being a LASIK but without the flap or alternatively to think of it as “Key-hole LASIK

Why choose SMILE?

SMILE is particularly of benefit for patients with larger prescriptions. It could be a better option for you than LASIK or LASEK under certain circumstances.

Sometimes during a Consultation with a Surgeon, the Surgeon can be concerned that your eyes might be a little “Dry” or not producing enough tears for laser surgery. SMILE might be a better option in this instance.

In addition, for some patients whose corneas (the clear part of the eye) are thin, the Surgeon may recommend SMILE as an alternative to LASIK or LASEK.

Lastly, SMILE is a better option than LASIK for those participating in contact sports and has a quicker recovery than LASEK: the Surgeon may recommend SMILE as an alternative here too.

The Wellington Eye Clinic can offer the best solution for any given set of circumstances rather than one solution only.

About the Wellington Eye Clinic

The Wellington Eye Clinic was founded in 1980. It was the first independent clinic in Western Europe to purchase an excimer laser, the laser used to correct eyesight, and introduced laser eye surgery to Ireland in the early 1990’s.

  • The clinic is surgeon owned and surgeon managed.
  • Patients are seen by a surgeon from their first visit to the clinic. Mr Paul Kenna has been with the clinic since 1991, and Mr Arthur Cummings since 1998. The clinic specialises in laser and refractive surgery to allow patients to reduce their dependence on glasses and contact lenses. The Doctors are Irish, live in Ireland and offer a long term relationship with patients.

The clinic offers a lifetime warranty on laser eye surgery. If for example your vision slips below driving standard, and the vision can be corrected by a repeat treatment, the enhancement is provided at no cost.

In particular the clinic prides itself in being able to offer the best solution to patients’ visual needs.

SMILE is the latest technique that the clinic is in a position to offer.
